Changes In Circumstances Equal Changes In Goals
By MCN Staff

Recent corporate lay-offs and the subsequent rise in the US unemployment rate indicate that circumstances in the workplace have changed. Change is inevitable, but responses to change can leave indelible impact on a person's career. As Spencer Johnson, M.D. suggests in his book, Who Moved My Cheese?, the way a person responds to change has impact on personal as well as professional success. However, before one can respond to change, one must be able to recognize change. The ability to see change on the horizon of your workplace environment can give you competitive-advantage. Use the list below to evaluate and sharpen your change-acuity. This exercise may also result in some redefined goals.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Are co-workers or managers avoiding making eye contact with me lately?
  2. Has my previously pristine performance evaluation or feedback suddenly gone sour?
  3. Has the company recently reduced perks or parties?
  4. Has a key manager suddenly left the company for no apparent reason?
  5. Has the quality or the tone of the information you receive changed significantly?
  6. Are your projects or assignments diminishing number or scope?
  7. Has your manager or supervisor suddenly taken a diametrically different approach to workplace issues?
  8. Do I see unexpected, new faces in my workplace sphere?
  9. Is there an unusual abundance of doublespeak going on in upper management?
  10. Do I see the end of something, or do I see the beginning of something?
If this self-examination did not result in redefined goals, perhaps it provided food for thought.
