Life after a Company Downsizing
Altha Moore is a freelance writer and owns her own company, "TheCuttingEdgeAdmin".

We don't know whether the economy is going in either a bell-shaped curve or L-shaped. Either way, hang on! If you've just been given your pink slip, never fear, there is life after a company downsizing.

Here are several tips that worked for me during my job search:

Network
Utilize all of your resources, whether they are church members, friends, ex-coworkers, family members, or association members. Also check with your local workforce commission. The commission may have a directory that lists career site links by job specification and career training information. Let people know what your skills are, and let them know what types of employment you are open to. Don't be too anxious to portray the idea that you want to start right back at the top with an organization. That just might not happen so quickly.

Resume Preparation
There are many tips on the Internet that are "how too's" on resume and cover letter design. Write down all of your skills first and then regroup them in order of importance. Review the list again and begin to prepare a rough draft of your resume. Before you send your resume out to anyone, check for mistakes. It is good to have a second eye to review your resume before potential employers do. Remember, your resume is a picture of you. It is the only picture job prospects will have of you.

Internet Research
Keep in mind that before you go off to your interview, find out as much as you can about the potential employer. The Internet is a great place to start. If you are dealing with an agency, ask the representative as many questions as you can. Also ask about the dress codes of the company. Be prepared when the interviewer asks, "Do you know what our company does?"

Brush up on your Software Skills
Be prepared for testing on word processing, presentation and spreadsheet packages. Visit the bookstore and get a copy of a software manual to browse through if you know you will be tested on a specific software package.

Remember, when one door closes, another one opens. There is life after a company downsizing and you can survive it.
