Savvy Corporate Socializing
By MCN Staff
How does one handle those workplace-related social gatherings? The simplest
answer is, "very carefully." But, for those who may want to actually develop a
personal strategy designed for maximizing these opportunities, here are a few tips.
SCS Tips
- Find out the "why" of the event so this information can guide you in
choosing your attire and your primary topics for conversation.
- Plan how you will meet new people, develop new contacts, and establish
foundations for building professional relationships.
- Plan a timely arrival that will allow you an opportunity to quickly
observe who is present, where they are present, and with whom they are
present.
- Choose where you will "move in" to make your presence known. Choose
the path of "least intrusion" to make your first move. Remember to "move
on" once you meet, greet, and converse. Do not attempt to monopolize
someone else's time.
- Less is best when it comes to food and alcohol consumption.
- Review introduction protocol so you can introduce people you meet to
others. This courtesy is appreciated. Give a person's name your full
attention, and make eye contact.
- Refrain from hugs or kisses and offer a handshake. Of course, this does
not apply if you are in an environment where this is culturally acceptable.
Cultural awareness is priority number one.
- Carry your business cards in a well-designed, easily accessible case. A
polished presentation of your business card cannot be accomplished if you
have to fish or fumble.
- Keep the conversation light. Be tastefully humorous if you have a knack
for it.
- Always thank the host and make a complimentary comment before
leaving.
Having a strategy helps one prepare for corporate socializing, but it does not replace
brilliant spontaneity derived from the joy of being with people.
