Emphasize Competencies Employers Seek

The events of last September prompted companies to become more vigilant in their efforts to provide a safe workplace environment. These efforts begin with the people companies hire. Therefore, it is helpful to be aware of some of the competencies employers look for when they screen applicants for open positions. Below is a list compiled from research conducted by Global Literacies.

• Maturity -Stability of performance under stress. How have you handled emergencies and crises in the past?
• Flexibility/Adaptability -Ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances.
• Change Management -Ability to function rationally in the midst of both uncertainty and change.
• Openness -Ability to be receptive to new ideas and different practices.
• Contextual Thinking -Ability to see the "big picture" and understand the complexities related to this picture.

A well-prepared presentation of your competencies in the above areas is very strategic in gaining competitive advantage.
