Prevent Yourself from being Stereotyped
Let's face facts, there are quite a few stereotypes out there
that people use to judge our success or failure in the corporation.
Many will say that it is not important how others perceive you.
We believe that when perceptions are stereotypical in nature
the burden is placed on you the individual, to dispel them. Emphasis
is on you and individual because it is not your
responsibility to eliminate the misconception for your entire
race. However, falling into the stereotypical patterns
will place a ceiling on your success. We have listed a few ways
to help you with this endeavor:
- Keep a level head. Control your temper. Channel anger and
hostility into positive actions. Think before you act, allow yourself
a chance to calm down and use good judgment.
- Prepare yourself for higher positions. Do not expect promotions
or raises simply because you are a minority. However, when promoted
- do not feel undeserving. Remember you earned it.
- Always achieve at the highest possible level. Your attitude
about your performance should not be "to do as little as
possible to get by." This does not mean that you should
work yourself into the hospital.
- Be aware of the big picture. Understand the shades of gray
in which people relate to you on a daily basis. Everyone who smiles
on the elevator will not have your best interests at heart. Do
not be angry because everyone will not be your friend just be
aware.
- Do not assume that all nonminorities are out to get you and
that they do not want you, to succeed. Remember that the only
person who takes joy in your success is you.
- Do not allow petty differences to affect your performance
or standing within the organization. Like the old adage our parents
constantly referenced: "just because Tommy jumps off a building
does that mean you also have to jump off a building."
