Tips for a Successful Job Fair Visit

At a recent job fair in Houston, Texas, I was able to observe job applicants as they embarked upon the event. Many had a look of confusion and doubt others appeared disheveled and unprepared. There were a few that gracefully glided through the fair as though they were professional fair attendees. These individuals appeared to know why they were there and quickly got right to work on accomplishing their goal.

I selected several of the "professional fair attendees" to closely monitor as they waltzed through the fair and I was able to identify a few things that they had in common. Some of these items were observed as they entered the fair others were observed as they mingled with the employers. This collection of Job Fair Tips will surely contribute to your success at your next job fair.

· Research the companies that will be at the Job Fair. Prepare a list of employers that are hiring in your area of expertise and tailor your resumes to fit the positions that they have available.

· Bring several resumes. You will need to distribute them to each prospective employer. A small portfolio is sufficient to hold your resumes.

· Dress professional but comfortable. Wear comfortable shoes. You will spend a lot of time on your feet.

· Prior to the event become familiar with parking lots and bus routes. This will allow you to spend your time in the Fair and not driving around outside looking for a space to park or walking several blocks because you got of the bus to soon.

· If you do have a distance to walk, visit the restrooms to tidy up from windblown hair or perspiration.

· Leave your children with a friend or in Day Care.

· Be prepared to interview. Bring a list of job references with phone numbers and addresses.

· Take advantage of seminars if time permits.
