Now that you have landed that new job or promotion you should focus your attention on an early success program. While your manager is still in the complimentary stage and your peers are in the welcoming stage, you should present a positive attitude and a good set of work skills. Remember that first impressions are lasting. Take heed to the following six guidelines to ensure that you start on the right foot.
1. Be willing to do more than your share.
The willingness to take on extra responsibility when your schedule permits is a positive. Managers appreciate such behavior. Make sure however, that you are able to perform the extra tasks without interfering with you normal work load.
2. Adapt quickly to your new work situation.
Learn your company culture and organizational structure. Pay attention to how things are done and the specific management style being used. Knowledge of this information allows you to fit into the organization quickly.
3. Communicate effectively with subordinates, peers and management.
Become known as someone who listens well and is cooperative and courteous. An employee that can accomplish goals and communicate well is an asset to any company. Exhibiting good communication skills early will show that you are an exceptional employee.
4. Keep management informed of your progress.
Make sure your manager stays abreast of and is committed to your projects. You can achieve this by providing your manager with periodic updates of projects and assignments. When evaluation time comes around it will not be difficult for him/her to provide a favorable review for you if they have been kept informed.
5. Be assertive and self-confident.
Exhibit an assertive and self-confident behavior by taking responsibility for your actions, admitting your mistakes and standing up for your beliefs. People with these qualities earn respect from their peers and management.
6. Create an agenda.
When you begin a new job or is placed in a new position you want to solve all of the problems and be the hero. You must remember that "Rome was not built in a day". Take your time. Do not spread yourself to thin. Prioritize your goals and select the top 3 or 4 hot items to focus your energy on. Once you have those accomplishments under your belt start working on the rest of the list.
